Culmination of EventsThe Internal State of Russia was already in a volatile situation, but by February 1917 the situation became dire.
1) Russia suffered an extraordinarily cold winter. Average temperatures in Petrograd were -15C. 2) Food and Fuel Shortages Continued to Develop 3) By February, many factories had closed due to the fuel shortages. 4) Lay offs at the Putilov Steel Works, combined with the International Women's Day marches, brought people onto the streets. Peaceful demonstrations for an end to war turned quickly to open anarchy and discontent aimed straight at the Tsar 5) Meanwhile, the Tsar failed to act. Instead, he and his wife continually blamed the Tsar until it was too late. By March, the Provisional Government and the Petrograd Soviets had been formed. The Tsar was forced to abdicate. |
